IP protection class (International Protection Marking)

The IP protection classes indicate how well a product is protected against the ingress of foreign bodies such as dust and water. The abbreviation "IP" stands for "Ingress Protection" and is supplemented by two numbers that indicate the degree of protection. The first number describes the protection against solid foreign bodies, e.g. dust or contact. It ranges from 0 (no protection) to 6 (completely dustproof). The second number indicates the protection against water and ranges from 0 (no protection) to 9 (protected against high-pressure water at a certain temperature). For example, protection class IP67 means that the product is fully protected against dust (6) and is also resistant to temporary immersion in water (7).
